What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
One of the fastest growing trends in plastic surgery is the Brazilian Butt Lift. Patients are actively seeking to get curves in all the right places, and the buttocks are no exception. What is this trendy plastic surgery procedure anyway?
Brazilian Butt Lift is the nickname for transferring fat from other parts of the body and placing it in the buttocks. Using liposuction, the surgeon will harvest fat from areas of your body like the abdomen, waist, and hips to create a smaller midsection. From there, the surgeon will inject your fat into areas of the buttocks that are flat or where more projection is desired. Brazilian Butt Lift can turn your stubborn areas of unwanted fat into the hour glass figure many patients desire.
It is important to understand that not all forms of liposuction can be used in the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. Liposuction procedures that destroy fat cells cannot be used. For example, laser assisted liposuction melts and destroys fat cells. Fat cells need to be alive to have a successful outcome when transferred. Traditional liposuction and Tickle Liposuction are commonly used for the Brazilian Butt Lift because the fat cells are not destroyed in the fat harvesting process.
Why is the Brazilian Butt Lift with Tickle Lipo better?
Tickle Liposuction is the gentlest form of liposuction available. Not only can it be performed comfortably under a local anesthetic, the process for how the fat cells are separated from muscle and skin tissue preserves more fat cells to transfer than traditional liposuction. Traditional liposuction is performed under general anesthesia because the method in which a plastic surgeon has to detach the fat cells from muscle and skin tissue is too painful to tolerate under local anesthetic. The aggressive means by which traditional liposuction removes the fat does not destroy all the fat cells, but it can damage some in the process.
During the post-operative healing phase of the Brazilian Butt Lift or any other fat transfer procedure, we expect to lose a portion of fat cells. This is why we over fill the area with the transferred cells, allowing for the expected loss. If a large percentage of the harvested cells are damaged, there will likely be more loss of volume. This could be why some patients express that their Brazilian Butt Lift results are not the same size on each buttock, or that they don’t understand why their results didn’t last.
With Tickle Lipo used for the fat harvesting portion of the Brazilian Butt Lift, Dr. Rod is able to place a larger percentage of viable fat cells into the buttocks. The higher percentage of viable cells means we lower the percentage of fat cells that do not survive the transfer process. While we still have to account for some loss, this method is proving to be more stable and satisfactory for Dermacare Cosmetic Surgery patients.
So, does this mean you can have a Brazilian Butt Lift with Tickle Lipo under local anesthesia?
As always, the Tickle Lipo procedure is very comfortable for patients when using local anesthesia and oral sedation. However, the actual transfer of the harvested fat cells to the buttocks requires another level of anesthesia, so that the patient can tolerate the transfer part of the procedure. Dr. Rod uses a layering technique when he injects the fat cells into the buttock area. Administering the fat cells below the muscle, on top of the muscle and under the skin. This technique is preferred because the fat cells adapt to their new environment more effectively, as opposed to just placing all of the volume beneath the skin. Local anesthesia does not reach all the areas where Dr. Rod is placing fat to the buttocks. Therefore, Dr. Rod has a Board Certified Anesthesiologist provide twilight sedation to keep patients comfortable.
