What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid Surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. It is a highly individualized procedure that addresses droopy skin, wrinkles, puffiness, and other signs of aging around the upper and lower eyelids.

An upper blepharoplasty is to be considered separate from a lower blepharoplasty. An upper blepharoplasty will address the excess skin on the upper portion of the eyelids. Alongside the aesthetic benefits, there is also a medical benefit to this surgery as well. Often times the excess skin can impair patients’ vision, by removing said excess skin, the vision is restored, and patients will achieve a refreshed, awake look.

A lower blepharoplasty addresses the ‘bags’ and puffiness on the lower portion of the eye. This surgical procedure involves removal of the herniated fat pads under each eye. With the removal of the fat pads this creates a permanent solution to help smooth out the under eyes.

While an upper and lower blepharoplasty are considered two separate procedures, they can be addressed together surgically.

Patients that suffer from droopy eyelids, with excess skin or fat, may benefit from eyelid surgery at Dermacare Plastic Surgery. Under the care of Dr. Rod, patients can achieve their ideal look and possibly even improve their range of vision.

Eyelid Surgery Candidates

The ideal Candidate for Eyelid Surgery has droopy or loose skin around the eyes or bags under the eyes. However, not everyone is a candidate for eyelid surgery. That’s why Dr. Rod recommends that all patients schedule an initial consultation at our Phoenix office to discuss their options. If eyelid surgery is not possible, Dr. Rod can recommend alternative procedures to help patients achieve their goals.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

As people age, their skin loses its elasticity. In addition to producing noticeable changes in the rest of the face, this process is particularly apparent in the eyelids, which can begin to droop. Sometimes, patients can even experience dark circles or puffy areas under the eyes. Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, can address droopy or loose skin around the eyes and bags under the eyes.

FAQ

COMMON Eyelid Surgery QUESTIONS

Does eyelid surgery leave scars?

Like all surgeries, blepharoplasty does leave scars. However, skilled surgeons such as Dr. Rod place incisions in natural creases (like the eyelid fold or lash line) to make scars nearly invisible over time. Proper aftercare and treatments like scar creams can further minimize their appearance.

How Long Does it Take to Recover from Blepharoplasty?

Recovery time periods for any surgery will vary from patient to patient. In general, blepharoplasty patients need at least a week off work to recover from their surgery, during which time they can’t wear makeup.u202f Your exact recovery time period will depend on your unique case. Staying well-hydrated, resting, icing, eating well, and sleeping at a 30-degree angle usually results in a faster recovery.

Can Blepharoplasty Improve My Vision?

While blepharoplasty can’t make you see images more sharply as glasses and contacts do, it can help patients see better if their eyelids droop so much that they obstruct their vision. A consultation with Dr. Rod will be able to tell you if this surgery can help improve your vision.

Why Do Aging Eyes Make Me Look Tired in the First Place?

Your eyes are one of the first areas of the face to show the signs of aging. Wrinkles, loss of skin laxity, and the way your body stores fat in the eyelid and under-eye area can all contribute to you having a sleepy, older look to your eyes even though you’re still young and well-rested. Blepharoplasty can treat all these signs of aging and provide results that make you look as great as you feel inside.

Are the Results of Blepharoplasty Permanent?

Once the fat pads are removed from the lower eyelids there is no chance of them re-appearing. What will need to be addressed as the aging process continues, is the elasticity of the fragile skin beneath the eyes. Radio-frequency treatments for the lower eyelids will help maintain the results of your lower blepharoplasty because these treatments help to tighten the skin.

How much does eyelid surgery cost?

The cost of eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) varies based on the surgeon's experience, location, and whether you're having upper, lower, or both eyelids done. For more detailed information regarding pricing, please schedule a consultation at Dermacare Plastic Surgery today.

Is eyelid surgery covered by insurance?

Eyelid surgery is often considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. However, if droopy eyelids interfere with your vision (a condition verified through visual field testing), insurance may cover the cost of upper eyelid surgery. Always consult your insurance provider for specifics.

How long does the eyelid surgery procedure take?

Eyelid surgery typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on whether you’re having upper, lower, or both eyelids addressed. Combined procedures or complex cases may take slightly longer.

Can I get upper and lower eyelid surgery at the same time?

Yes, upper and lower eyelid surgeries can be performed during the same procedure. This combination is common and efficient, minimizing overall recovery time compared to undergoing separate surgeries.

How do I know if my eyelids are droopy enough to need eyelid surgery?

If your droopy eyelids obstruct your vision, make you look constantly tired, or affect your confidence, you might be a candidate for eyelid surgery. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon or ophthalmologist can confirm if surgery is necessary.

How can I reduce bruising after eyelid surgery?

To minimize bruising use cold compresses for the first 48 hours, keep your head elevated while resting, avoid strenuous activity, smoking, and alcohol, and follow your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions closely.

Who performs eyelid surgery in Goodyear, AZ?

When seeking out a plastic surgeon for your eyelid surgery, search for board-certified plastic surgeons such as Dr. Rod in Goodyear, AZ, specializing in blepharoplasty.

Can eyelid surgery get rid of hooded eyes?

Yes, eyelid surgery can effectively remove excess skin and fat, causing hooded eyes. By tightening and contouring the area, the procedure creates a more open and refreshed appearance.

How long will it take for my eyelid surgery scars to heal?

Scars from eyelid surgery typically heal significantly within 2-4 weeks, with continued improvement over several months. Full scar maturation, where scars flatten and fade, can take up to a year. Your surgeon may recommend scar treatments to accelerate healing.
