What is a Breast Reduction?
Breast Reduction surgery lifts your breasts while removing fat, glandular tissue, and skin. What this does is make your breasts smaller, lighter, and firmer. Dr. Rod, Dermacare’s board-certified plastic surgeon, may also reduce the size of the areola. You will be left with breasts that are proportionate to your body, figure, and frame.
If your breasts are sagging, but you are happy with their size, then a Breast Lift may be a better plastic surgery procedure for you.

Are you a good candidate for a Breast Reduction?

Can I have another procedure done at the same time?
Absolutely! Many Phoenix patients elect to have Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck performed at the same time as their Breast Reduction. This combination of procedures is known as a “Mommy Makeover.” The advantages of this plastic surgery procedure combination include more extensive and cost efficient improvements with less total down time and time off work or school.
Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast Reduction surgery is usually done under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Depending on certain factors, the procedure usually takes between two to three hours. During your Breast Reduction procedure, Dr. Rod will create your more desired size, shape and symmetry by removing excess skin and breast tissue. He will use the most precise closure technique that will provide you the opportunity to heal with the least amount of scarring.
How long will the results from my Breast Reduction surgery last?
Your breast will remain a consistent size as long as you do not gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant. It is important to know that gravity and the effects of aging will eventually cause your breasts to loosen and sag over time. If this has happened, then a Breast Lift may be what you need to reshape and contour your breasts.
Breast Reduction Surgery Aftercare
Our Phoenix board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Rod will discuss how long it will take before you are cleared to return to your normal level of activity and work. After your Breast Reduction Surgery, you will be given detailed instructions about your post surgical care.
Immediately after your Breast Reduction surgery:
- If you’ve had general anesthesia, you might wake up feeling groggy or disoriented.
- You will have a surgical dressing over your upper chest and will probably have drains coming from each of your breasts.
- You may have compression sleeves on your legs to help with circulation (this is to prevent blood clots in your legs)
- You will feel some discomfort, but your medication will keep you from feeling pain.
- You will be observed by the hospital staff for a few hours before you are allowed to go home, where you will need someone to care for you for the next few days.
- Before the hospital or surgical center releases you, you will receive visual instructions on how to properly care for your incisions, instructing you on how frequently to change the bandages and how to empty your drainage tubes.
- When the anesthesia wears off, you may have some pain. Any possible discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. If the pain is extreme or long lasting, contact Dr. Rod with AZ Dermacare immediately.
- You might notice a change in breast size, but at this point you will have significant swelling. In most cases, this swelling will remain for weeks or even months.
Breast Reduction Surgery Recovery
Many Phoenix patients ask questions about the recovery time of Breast Reduction surgery. When your plastic surgery is complete, an elastic bandage or support bra may be worn to help minimize swelling and support of the breasts as they heal. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. See below for a general idea of what you can anticipate.
If you have drains after your Breast Reduction surgery, they will most likely be removed at your first follow-up appointment with Dr. Rod. This first appointment is usually within the first week after your plastic surgery operation.
It is important that you keep your incisions dry. You may have Steri-Strips on top of your incision line, or you may have sutures internally and tissue glue externally to bind your incision edge. You will be given specific care instructions at your preoperative appointment or sent home with you on the day of your surgery. Dr. Rod may also go over any specific post-operative care with your friend, family member or caretaker, who will be assisting you during your recovery. Be careful not to get any creams, lotions or topical Arnica into the incision because it can cause inflammation.
In approximately ten days after your Breast Reduction surgery, your incisions will be checked and stitches may be removed.
Monitoring Your Temperature
While you are healing from surgery, please take your temperature regularly. If your temperature is elevated, it could mean a possible infection.
Soreness & Pain
Your breasts will feel tender, stiff and sore for a few days. More than likely you will not want to move around too much. This will subside. We advise all our Phoenix patients to please continue to take their medications and follow the precise instructions given for post-operative care.
As with any surgery, there will be swelling. With Breast Reduction surgery, you may be swollen for up to three months after your surgery. Your breasts will be smaller than they were prior to surgery, even with the swelling. Most Phoenix patients do not notice the swelling because of the reduced breast size.
Bruises may or may not be present after your surgery. Bruising is dependent on the patient, technique used, and the effectiveness of the epinephrine that was administered during your surgery. Any visible bruising will subside over the next few weeks.
It is important to sleep with two to three fluffy pillows under your upper back and head. You may also choose to sleep on a reclined chair. As long as your upper torso is elevated to relieve any pressure on your treatment area, reduce swelling and decrease any pain.
You may be asked to take sponge baths until your incisions are closed and sutures are no longer in place. You may not be allowed to wash your hair for a while because you will not be allowed to raise your arms over your head. Please have your friend, family member or caregiver assist you with your bathing routine.
Even though you most likely will not feel up for much activity, you will be instructed to walk and move around as soon as you can. This is to prevent blood clots and swelling. You will be instructed not to exercise or engage in any strenuous activities for at least three to four weeks. Please, do not lift anything over five pounds or try to raise anything over your head until Dr. Rod releases you to do so. You should take your time healing. Your full range of motion should return in approximately six to ten weeks, depending on how well you’re healing.
Dr. Rod will give you specific instructions for your Breast Reduction recovery that will include all of the necessary information on how to care for your breasts post-surgery.
Breast Reduction Risks
Thankfully, any complications or risks associated with Breast Reduction surgeries are extremely rare. In fact, Breast Reduction surgery has a high satisfaction rate. - Infection and bleeding
- Changes in skin sensation
- Allergic reactions
- Damage to underlying structures
- Unsatisfactory results that may necessitate additional procedures
