Now that summer is over and suntans are fading, sun damage becomes more noticeable. Sun damage can make the skin appear dull and brown spots can appear on your face and upper chest.

With the holiday season upon us, no one has time for invasive procedures that require downtime. Luckily, Dermacare Cosmetic Surgery offers a FotoFacial treatment or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) that makes a tremendous difference in your skin with no impact on your schedule! Don’t just take our word for it. Check out this bloggers personal experience with FotoFacial.

“There is generally no recovery time for this procedure. Once the procedure was complete, the aesthetician washed my face and applied sunscreen. I was good to go. My face had a mild flush.”
– Toni-Marie Ippolito

By targeting brown pigmentation from sun damage, FotoFacials can improve your skin’s texture, tone, and smoothness. With each treatment, excess pigment is shrunk and rises to the outer layers of skin. At first, you will notice the pigment looks smaller and darker, but within 7-10 days it will slough off to reveal clearer skin. These post-treatment spots are often referred to as “peppering or coffee grounds” and become more significant for those with more brown spots.

We recommend first treatments be done on a day that will give you a couple of days to tolerate significant “peppering” without being concerned that they will be noticed at work, special events etc.

The FotoFacial consultation is very important for patients in order to share your goals and needs with the laser technician. A seasoned skin professional will guide you towards the best time to begin treatment and what to expect after. Any FotoFacial treatments performed after the first of a series tend to have very faint peppering that is much easier to manage in the 7-10 days following the treatment. Read this bloggers experience with significant peppering and how each additional treatment after the first went.

“I’m glad I decided to err on the side of caution and have my first IPL session done after work on a Friday so I had the weekend to recuperate.” – Lana

This is a standard for any new treatment you have on your skin. If you have important social obligations coming up, plan ahead of time to avoid having an issue and be confident you will look your best. Two to four weeks before an important event is recommended to enjoy the results of the treatment and to avoid any unforeseen issues.

Prepping the skin with exfoliation, like Microdermabrasion or dermaplane, before the FotoFacial is done (all in the same appointment), can allow for a more effective treatment and smoother skin that has a healthy glow. Not only does sun damaged skin need thorough exfoliation, the extra skin cell build up can interfere with a quality treatment. It is very safe to have these forms of mild exfoliation prior to a FotoFacial treatment. In some cases of extra sensitive skin, the exfoliation prep may be skipped, but can be done 7-10 days after or even one week prior to the FotoFacial treatment. Follow the guide of your licensed skin professional for exfoliation whenever treating for dullness and sun damage.

Treatments are done in a series of three or more sessions. One FotoFacial appointment takes about 45 minutes and no medication is required. Our FotoFacial device is equipped with a cooling tip that can briefly cool the skin before each pulse. Most people can tolerate this very well. However, if you are experiencing intolerable discomfort for any reason, topical anesthetic cream can be applied prior to treatment. The numbing cream will add approximately 20-30 minutes to your appointment. However, if you ask your skin professional to turn the energy down to be more comfortable, you could be foregoing a quality treatment. We have the topical anesthetic cream available for any patient that feels it is necessary to get through the recommended therapy. You may request a test spot to gauge your comfort level. Being assessed by a qualified, licensed professional is important to ensure a safe and effective treatment. Good communication between you and your laser technician will make your experience much better and you will see better results.
