A JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® treatment will counteract the effects of aging, such as gravity and loss of natural elasticity in our skin, which cause a narrowing of our “triangle of beauty” facial features, leading to a much heavier jawline and less youthful temple and forehead area.
The loss of mid-face volume is one of the hallmarks of facial aging. This occurs in varying degrees of severity, and can lead to significant changes in the facial appearance. One of the most noticeable changes is the loss of cheekbone definition. Historically, this was addressed with surgery to tighten the overlying skin and lift the deeper soft tissues. More recently, volumizing fillers have been used to provide a similar ‘lift’ without surgery. The goal is to restore volume in the mid-face to create a natural, youthful face.
An excellent way to add volume to your facial appearance without surgery is by using JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA®. In general, these dermal fillers diminish facial lines and wrinkles, and restore fullness and volume in the face, including cheeks, cheekbones, chin, and definition to the jawline.
What is VOLUMA®?
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® is the first filler formulated with lidocaine that is FDA approved to restore age-related volume changes in the cheeks.
Unlike other fillers commonly used to treat the mid-face, VOLUMA® is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. HA fillers are made from long chains of sugars that occur naturally in the skin. JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® is unique in that the HA is cross-linked through a process called Vycross that helps provide an excellent lifting capacity. This special cross-linking also helps to avoid degradation, making VOLUMA® last almost twice as long as other fillers.
Studies have shown that it can last up to 2 years. And since it is an HA filler, it can be molded and shaped into the desired contour after injection.Who is a candidate for VOLUMA®?
Virtually anyone with volume loss in their mid-face is a candidate for treatment with VOLUMA®, as well as individuals with poorly defined cheekbones.
Phoenix patients in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may not be appropriate candidates for surgery, but may benefit instead from VOLUMA® treatment. Patients in their 60s and beyond who have more significant skin laxity and volume loss tend to require more filler volume. And while these patients are often good candidates for surgery, they often choose volumizing filler treatments due to surgery concerns such as anesthesia and potential complications.

Results are almost instant after the first treatment and can last up to two years, depending on the facial area treated, the injection technique used. Phoenix patients can expect little to no downtime, but may experience some slight bruising or mild swelling which usually does not last long. Treatment takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes to perform. Patients may return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
How long does VOLUMA® last?
Clinical trials have shown that the volumizing results of JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® can last for up to 18 months. This can vary from individual to individual.
Can VOLUMA® be combined with other treatments?
VOLUMA® can be combined with other fillers, such as BOTOX® or JUVÉDERM®, and is suited for many facial areas except for the lips. Other treatments such as laser resurfacing may be incorporated into the procedure for a more complete facial rejuvenation.
